I was reading Mel Robbins' book "The Let Them Theory" about learning to let go of what other people think of you because you can't control it anyway. This is especially relevant to songwriters because my definition, we want people to like what we do and it is easy to forget you do it primarily for your OWN enjoyment.
Lyrics
If your friend doesn’t call when you really want her to
If your boss never gives you any credit
If your wife don’t do the dishes when you really need them done
If your mother disapproves of where you’re headed
If your sister thinks your silly when you colour your hair pink
If your neighbour thinks your garden looks a mess
Just remember not to care about what anybody thinks
‘cause what others say just isn’t worth your stress
CHORUS
It’s not the things that people do
That make you feel that you don’t matter
No, that power lies with you
So change the story in your mind
And let yourself be kind
If that girl back in school tell you she won’t be your friend
If your daddy don’t approve of being gay
Let them think what they want, it has nowt to do with you
Because your worth doesn’t depend on what they say
When someone says you should lose weight, that doesn’t mean you are not pretty
When you make a small mistake, you are not dumb
There is no point second guessing what other people think
Believe me most the time you will be wrong
CHORUS
It’s not the things that people do
That make you feel that you don’t matter
No, that power lies with you
So change the story in your mind
And let yourself be kind
Let the world say their piece, let the people do their thing
In the end you may just have to leave them to it
If you want a better life there’s a book shop here in town
that sells book to learn exactly how to do it
